  • It's common to stop at Half Moon Island in the South Shetland Islands when first arriving in Antarctica. Setting foot on land after days at sea was quite nice, and it felt like these chinstrap penguins were calling out to say hello.

  • Half Moon Island in the South Shetland Islands, off Antarctica, is one of the first places visitors stop after spending days in the drake passage. I tried to capture what it felt like to arrive at Antarctica for the first time with this shot from there, with the snow on the ground, blowing snow in the air, snow-covered, mountains in the background, and a chinstrap penguin amidst it all.

  • We don't appreciate penguins enough. While we think of them as silly and awkward on land, they survive harsh weather conditions and fight for survival daily. When the wind picked up and the snow started blowing almost painfully, I tried to capture a sense of what this chinstrap penguin on Half Moon Island in the South Shetland Islands deals with daily.

  • Antarctica is full of extreme weather conditions and can change in a second. On a blue-sky day with harsh sunlight, the wind suddenly picked up, becoming extremely strong and making it hard to walk. But through it all, this little chinstrap penguin on Half Moon Island just keeps going.

  • On land, penguins come across as awkward and funny with their waddling walk. But in the water, they're graceful and amazing. On Cuverville island, there were only a few penguins on shore. And if you just looked at the water, it seemed like nothing was happening. But looking below the surface revealed hundreds of gentoo penguins, swimming around, waiting for the first one to leave the water and walk onto land.

  • The dark and gloomy clouds above Useful Island, Antarctica kept making it feel like it should snow, but no snowflakes ever fell. By getting low and shooting through a snowbank, I was able to make it look like these gentoo penguins running across a distant hill were walking through blowing snow, capturing the feeling of the day.

  • A weddell seal peeks out from behind the ice, looking at the human visitors, near Astrolabe Island, Antarctica.

  • A lone adélie penguin sits on an iceberg near Useful Island, Antarctica. Because it's so early in the season, the water is quite clear, and the ice below the surface turns the water aqua.

  • At certain times of year, such as in the winter, you're able to land at Moffen Island in Svalbard. Anon was fortunate enough to land when there were some walruses around, but as he lay there for hours in the snow, the walruses weren't doing much. Suddenly, one came out of the water and started rolling around in the snow. He paused on his back for a moment, as if to say, "I'm ready for my closeup, darling" before getting up and going back into the ocean.

  • A weddell seal scratches its head after waking up from a nap on the ice at Astrolabe Island, Antarctica.

  • Cruising through the icebergs off Danco Island, Antarctica, you'd periodically see snowy "windows," framing the shore behind. After spotting one particularly pretty window, I was lucky enough to see a gentoo penguin walk through it, struggling to keep his balance on the icy snow.

  • Gourdin Island is in the Antarctic peninsula, where climate change is having an impact. It's somewhat ironic seeing this adélie penguin on an iceberg waving goodbye, as both will be affected by the changing weather.

  • Off Astrolabe Island in Antarctica, there are what appear to be many small pieces of ice, floating in the water and echoing the shape of the mountains. But looking below the surface, you realize how much is unseen.

  • Walrus spend a lot of their day lying around, sleeping. Walrus action is when they lift their head up. On a late winter trip to the Arctic, I spent hours lying in the snow on Moffen Island, just off of Spitsbergen, Svalbard. I was hoping for a break in the clouds to get the walrus backlit, but the dreary gray sky didn't look like it would cooperate. It started snowing, and the clouds parted just long enough for me to take this one frame of walrus acting like they normally do--sleeping--and then it went back to being gray.

  • WIldlife photography is always an uncertain thing, sometimes needing luck to go with skill and preperation. One morning on St. Andrew's Bay in South Georgia Island, I thought I was wasting my effots. We had a clear morning and were able to get to shore for an early sunrise, and I was hoping to get penguins backlit emerging from the water. I picked a spot where I saw them coming out, lay down on the beach, and waited. And waited. I think they could see me, so they were avoiding that spot. As the sun rose higher and higher, I kept wondering if I was wasting the golden light, and right as I was about to give up, a massive group of penguins came out of the water right in front of me, giving me the shot I wanted with the starburst, shadows, and reflections. My bad luck had completely changed!
