  • In late winter in Svalbard, in the high arctic when the sun spends hours just above the horizon, Anon saw a group of walrus lying in the snow. After being nearly hunted to extinction, walrus have made a tremendous recovery and are a fascinating species. Anon joined them, lying in the snow for hours, waiting for them to look at him. One briefly lifted its head, as if to see what this strange-smelling thing was, and then went back to sleep.

  • This bearded seal in a fjord in Svalbard was incredibly relaxed. It helped that we were all wearing black jackets instead of our polar bear costumes. We drifted by him in the zodiac, and he just didn't care. I held my camera over the edge of the zodiac as we came close, and fortunately he lifted his head to check us out and make sure we weren't hiding a polar bear before going back to sleep.

  • When shooting in Svalbard, you just never want to sleep--there's so much beauty around you all the time. But after a nap, I felt the ship's engine slow down and saw groups of humpbacks bubble net feeding all around the ship. We got into zodiacs to get low to the water, and after a few minutes, the whales came right up to us, fishing. I saw a dark spot in the water, leaned over the edge of the zodiac with my camera, and was able to capture this humpback's mouth as it breached the surface just a few yards away.

  • Walrus spend a lot of their day lying around, sleeping. Walrus action is when they lift their head up. On a late winter trip to the Arctic, I spent hours lying in the snow on Moffen Island, just off of Spitsbergen, Svalbard. I was hoping for a break in the clouds to get the walrus backlit, but the dreary gray sky didn't look like it would cooperate. It started snowing, and the clouds parted just long enough for me to take this one frame of walrus acting like they normally do--sleeping--and then it went back to being gray.
