  • The Arctic is beautiful year-round, but it's stunning in the winter when everything is white and the sun stays low to the horizon. On my first night on a boat-based trip in Svalbard, right after leaving Longyearbyen, we encountered this polar bear walking along the edge of the ice. She was curious, walking past us twice, with her full white coat glowing beautifully in the setting sun, and after growing bored with us, she silently walked off into the distance.

  • The dark and gloomy clouds above Useful Island, Antarctica kept making it feel like it should snow, but no snowflakes ever fell. By getting low and shooting through a snowbank, I was able to make it look like these gentoo penguins running across a distant hill were walking through blowing snow, capturing the feeling of the day.

  • On land, penguins come across as awkward and funny with their waddling walk. But in the water, they're graceful and amazing. On Cuverville island, there were only a few penguins on shore. And if you just looked at the water, it seemed like nothing was happening. But looking below the surface revealed hundreds of gentoo penguins, swimming around, waiting for the first one to leave the water and walk onto land.

  • Antarctica is full of extreme weather conditions and can change in a second. On a blue-sky day with harsh sunlight, the wind suddenly picked up, becoming extremely strong and making it hard to walk. But through it all, this little chinstrap penguin on Half Moon Island just keeps going.

  • Cruising through the icebergs off Danco Island, Antarctica, you'd periodically see snowy "windows," framing the shore behind. After spotting one particularly pretty window, I was lucky enough to see a gentoo penguin walk through it, struggling to keep his balance on the icy snow.

  • South Georgia Island is an amazing experience. You sail for days, and suddenly a small bit of land appears with mountains, glaciers, and an incredible wildlife density. It's hard to capture photos that do the experience of being there justice. I was lying in the sand focusing on this fur seal at sunrise when this group of penguins walked in front of me. This shot captures the South Georgia experience to me in one shot, as it has a range of wildlife, a range of weather, and a range of landscapes, all in one frame.
