  • On land, penguins come across as awkward and funny with their waddling walk. But in the water, they're graceful and amazing. On Cuverville island, there were only a few penguins on shore. And if you just looked at the water, it seemed like nothing was happening. But looking below the surface revealed hundreds of gentoo penguins, swimming around, waiting for the first one to leave the water and walk onto land.

  • WIldlife photography is always an uncertain thing, sometimes needing luck to go with skill and preperation. One morning on St. Andrew's Bay in South Georgia Island, I thought I was wasting my effots. We had a clear morning and were able to get to shore for an early sunrise, and I was hoping to get penguins backlit emerging from the water. I picked a spot where I saw them coming out, lay down on the beach, and waited. And waited. I think they could see me, so they were avoiding that spot. As the sun rose higher and higher, I kept wondering if I was wasting the golden light, and right as I was about to give up, a massive group of penguins came out of the water right in front of me, giving me the shot I wanted with the starburst, shadows, and reflections. My bad luck had completely changed!

  • A lone adélie penguin sits on an iceberg near Useful Island, Antarctica. Because it's so early in the season, the water is quite clear, and the ice below the surface turns the water aqua.

  • When shooting in Svalbard, you just never want to sleep--there's so much beauty around you all the time. But after a nap, I felt the ship's engine slow down and saw groups of humpbacks bubble net feeding all around the ship. We got into zodiacs to get low to the water, and after a few minutes, the whales came right up to us, fishing. I saw a dark spot in the water, leaned over the edge of the zodiac with my camera, and was able to capture this humpback's mouth as it breached the surface just a few yards away.

  • While on a zodiac off Spitsbergen, Svalbard looking for bears, I suddenly saw a splash in the water.

  • While sailing towards the Antarctic pensinula one morning, we were lucky enough to wake up at 3am to not only an amazing sky but an iceberg with chinstrap penguins, too. One by one, the penguins dove into the water to go hunting.

  • Off Astrolabe Island in Antarctica, there are what appear to be many small pieces of ice, floating in the water and echoing the shape of the mountains. But looking below the surface, you realize how much is unseen.

  • In a fjord in Svalbard, Anon encountered conditions he'd never seen before: waves newly-forming slush ice. Beyond the solid waves was a field of pancake ice, and further in the distance, a clearing storm. Using an ultra-wide angle lens, he composed a shot to capture Svalbard's ever-changing landscape.
