  • Spring in the arctic is a mix of melting ice and snow from a long winter and stunning light. In summer, walrus follow the melting pack ice and head north to find places to feed. This lone walrus went north a bit earlier than his pack and found shelter for the night on this piece of ice.

  • At certain times of year, such as in the winter, you're able to land at Moffen Island in Svalbard. Anon was fortunate enough to land when there were some walruses around, but as he lay there for hours in the snow, the walruses weren't doing much. Suddenly, one came out of the water and started rolling around in the snow. He paused on his back for a moment, as if to say, "I'm ready for my closeup, darling" before getting up and going back into the ocean.

  • There is a unique and complex world that we still don't know much about. After days of gale-force winds where Anon couldn't get into the water to look for orca, he finally found a protected area calm enough to jump into the cold, winter water near Tromsø, Norway and was rewarded with this ephemeral glance of an orca. Hidden from view at the surface, this orca quickly receeded into the dark abyss below.

  • The Arctic is beautiful year-round, but it's stunning in the winter when everything is white and the sun stays low to the horizon. On my first night on a boat-based trip in Svalbard, right after leaving Longyearbyen, we encountered this polar bear walking along the edge of the ice. She was curious, walking past us twice, with her full white coat glowing beautifully in the setting sun, and after growing bored with us, she silently walked off into the distance.

  • Walrus spend a lot of their day lying around, sleeping. Walrus action is when they lift their head up. On a late winter trip to the Arctic, I spent hours lying in the snow on Moffen Island, just off of Spitsbergen, Svalbard. I was hoping for a break in the clouds to get the walrus backlit, but the dreary gray sky didn't look like it would cooperate. It started snowing, and the clouds parted just long enough for me to take this one frame of walrus acting like they normally do--sleeping--and then it went back to being gray.

  • In a fjord in Svalbard, Anon encountered conditions he'd never seen before: waves newly-forming slush ice. Beyond the solid waves was a field of pancake ice, and further in the distance, a clearing storm. Using an ultra-wide angle lens, he composed a shot to capture Svalbard's ever-changing landscape.
